RM 033 Last year, Richard Mille launched the Extra Flat RM 033, a more practical and versatile round watch. Their thinnest watch ever, with a case diameter of 45.7mm and a thickness of just 6.3mm, it's almost 2mm thinner than Mille's next thinnest watch, the RM 016. Frankly, before trying the RM 033 I was sure it would be too big and look ridiculous on my wrist. My favorite watches are about 38mm in diameter, and I think I've reached my limit with the Audemars Piguet Offshore at 42.5mm.
To my surprise, my initial concerns about size were gone. This watch fits my 6.75 inch wrist perfectly. A consistent design feature of Richard Mille cases is their attractive curvature that fits the wrist. On the RM 033, the curvature of the back of the case and the back of the lugs is very dramatic, and this is the case feature that impresses me the most. It's clearly designed to fit the wrist size as comfortably as possible, and, sure enough, it works a lot better on the wrist than I expected. It comes on a supple, well-made rubber strap secured by a spring-loaded deployant clasp – one of the finest clasps in haute horlogerie, in fact. Combined with the ultra-light titanium case and movement, the RM 033 cheap replica watches is always a pleasure to wear.
The massive titanium lugs are secured to the case using eight highly polished titanium spline screws. According to Richard Mille, the modular lugs can be easily replaced if damaged. A total of eight highly polished spline screws are visible on the bezel. Combined with the other eight screws on the bottom cover, they secure the three-part case and provide better torque control than traditional screws (according to Richard Mille). Spline screws are used throughout the case and movement, and also secure the strap to the case and the bridges to the base plate. Highly polished screws catch and reflect light like tiny mirrors, giving the watch its expensive look that can be seen from a distance.
Fine vertical bristles are found on top of the bezel, caseback and case middle, adorning nearly all surfaces. The outer circumference of the bezel, caseback and lug edges are hand-chamfered and mirror-polished to the highest quality.
One thing that does bother me are the sharp edges found on the narrow bottom of the top of the bezel and caseback, both of which extend beyond the middle of the case. I was expecting these surfaces to have well beveled edges as well, especially given the high retail price of RM 033. Otherwise, the finishing on all other surfaces is excellent in my opinion.
The sapphire crystal dial has a large, sloped oval opening in the center surrounded by stylized translucent Roman numerals. At first, I didn't like this offset oval, but as time went on, I liked it more and more. I still don't like it, but looking into other people, especially women, I'm in the minority. The dial is coated with an anti-glare treatment to reduce reflections, as is the upper and lower sapphire crystal and case back. The RM 033 is a simple watch, showing only the hours and minutes, with superb white gold hands. They take the shape of a flat dauphine, each coated with two alternating trapezoidal areas of luminescent material. The top surface is brushed, while the outer edges are sharply chamfered and mirror-polished on all sides, allowing incoming light to shine brilliantly. When the light hits them at the right angle, they look like mini lightsabers - an effect I like to see as often as possible.
The ultra-thin case of the RM 033 is achieved by the Richard Mille caliber RMXP1, a 2.6 mm thick self-winding movement with a platinum micro-rotor. The movement, one of the thinnest in the world, was manufactured by Vaucher for Richard Mille. Formerly part of the Parmigiani Fleurier brand, Vaucher is now an independent manufacturer of fine movements for many luxury brands. As with all movements manufactured for Richard Mille, the basic movement has been completely reworked to match Mille's vision and design specifications. The only thing left of the basic movement is the gear train and escapement. Speaking of the escapement, I was very pleased to see the use of a high quality, variable inertia free spring balance wheel rather than a regulator based escapement as found in Mille's other Vaucher based movements. The solid platinum oscillating weight winds the mainspring in both directions – no matter which way it is turned, the oscillating weight always winds the mainspring. Beautifully crafted and fun to watch, one major annoyance is its sound. As you move your wrist throughout the day, you hear it spinning—it sounds pretty cheap, like the tinny tinkle of the rotor on a Valjoux 7750 chronograph.
Richard Mille pioneered the use of titanium for the main structural components of the movement – the baseplate and bridges that house all the gears, trains, levers and escapement. In the RMXP1 movement, the titanium baseplate and bridges are first sandblasted and then polished by hand. The soleplate is coated with Titalyt®, a titanium protective layer that increases hardness and improves corrosion resistance. The result is a smooth, matte finish that is gray in color with hints of brown. This contrasts with the black PVD coating (improving corrosion resistance) on the brushed titanium bridge plates, which hold the gear train to the baseplate. The contrast enhances the depth and dimension of the movement – something that is especially difficult with ultra-thin movements. well done.
The skeletonization done on the baseplate—the part of the movement visible through the sapphire crystal dial—is not extensive. I would describe it as partial skeletonization. To me, a fully skeletonized movement should always be open and airy, allowing full visibility into the movement. Follow Carl. The ribs that run throughout the movement are actually functional structural elements, as used in Formula 1 racing engines. They increase the stiffness and strength of the movement, which increases shock resistance (remember those seven technical principles I mentioned earlier?). Similar to how the engine is secured in an F1 car, four large splined screws, along with rubber O-rings, secure the movement to the case, increasing shock resistance compared to using more traditional case rings.
Unusually, with the exception of the anchor's plate jewels, all visible jewels are synthetic sapphires rather than the more traditional synthetic rubies. Their clear color blends subtly with the color of the movement.
Make no mistake: I love the RM 033. After wearing it for a week, my admiration for the Richard Mille brand has only grown. The replica watches for sale is distinctive, with an ultra-modern industrial aesthetic. It's also well-made, well-crafted, and comfortable.
